Overview

When 15-year-old Micah faced a sudden heart failure diagnosis and the long road to a transplant, his education and social world came to an abrupt halt. Thanks to a telepresence robot, Micah was able to stay connected with his teachers and classmates—continuing school in real time from home and the hospital.

Background

Micah, an active high school student and athlete, lived what his mother Brittany described as a “normal, healthy” life. That changed suddenly in December 2023, when he came home from tennis practice complaining of chest pain. Within 48 hours, doctors discovered his heart was functioning at only seven percent capacity. By Friday morning, Micah was in surgery receiving a pacemaker and defibrillator—and soon after, he learned he would need a heart transplant.

As his medical journey began, Micah faced an unexpected challenge: how to continue his education while undergoing long-term treatment and recovery.

The Challenge

Micah and his mom realized recovery meant months away from school and his friends. His small school district had recently lost its only homebound teacher, leaving very few options.

The only alternative was transferring into another district far from his friends and teachers—a disruption his family was desperate to avoid.

Micah was in need of a solution that would allow him to attend school on a regular basis, meet with teachers, and engage with his peers in a meaningful way.

The Solution

Determined to keep her son connected, Micah’s mother Brittany researched alternatives and discovered Reggie’s Robots, a telepresence robot solution available through their regional education service center.

Once approved, the impact was immediate. Micah attended class virtually each day, interacting with teachers and classmates as if he were physically present.

“It went from ‘I’m missing everything’ to ‘Mom, make me a sandwich, I’ve got to get to class.’ No kid says that—but he did,” said Brittany.

Through the robot, Micah was able to participate fully—listening, responding, and even joining classroom conversations. His classmates quickly embraced the technology, greeting the robot and treating Micah as part of the group.

Just because my situation is different doesn’t mean I’m different,” Micah told his peers.

Results

Continuous Learning

Micah stayed current with coursework throughout surgeries and hospital stays.

Restored Normalcy

The robot brought routine, purpose, and connection back into his day.

Classroom Inclusion

Teachers and classmates interacted with him naturally, reinforcing belonging.

Family Confidence

His mother calls the technology a “saving grace” that made education possible during this crisis.

“The fact that his education and interaction with his peers didn’t have to stop has been a blessing,” Brittany said.

Today

Now thriving post-transplant, Micah continues to balance medical care with his education. His family founded Transplant Teens, a national organization that supports young transplant recipients and advocates for accessible educational tools—like the telepresence robot that changed his life.

I can’t imagine how we would have gotten through this without it. It’s been truly life-changing.
